Blackwell Publishing

Simple Search

Using quotation marks is the best way to search for exact terms. For example, if you run a title search for social theory you will find only the product with the words in that exact order, whereas entering social theory will find other titles that contain the words social and theory such as Readings in Social Welfare: Theory and Policy.

Website search

If you are looking for information on the website, other than books or journals, e.g. office addresses, the Blackwell mission statement, or executive biographies, please use the new Website search.

Catalog Search

Choose the fields in which you wish to search from the drop down menu (so you can either search on any of the fields associated with our publications, or the just the author/editor name fields or just the title. You may search on multiword phrases, such as both the first and family name of an author, or the full title of a publication. For example Manuel Castells will give you exact phrase matching on this author name. Obviously, if you enter a single word like economic you will get a very large number of matches. Searches are not case sensitive.

Advanced Searching

You may use both free text and Boolean searching. You will get better results when searching for multiword phrases rather than by searching on a single word or term. Searches are not case sensitive.

If you know the type of publication you require, select it using the radio buttons Books Journals

Phrasing Your Search

Our search supports the Boolean operators AND and OR.

Generally using AND between items will give you fewer results than using OR between items.

For example: Searching for End of Millennium AND Manuel Castells will find only books containing both terms, whereas searching for End of Millennium OR Manuel Castells will give books called End of Millennium by other writers, should we publish them, as well as other books by Manuel Castells, as we are looking for matches either in the title field or in the author field.

As you change between different types of publication to search on you will see the options in the drop down menus change. This is so that you can search fields relevant to that type of publication only.

If you want to search on a series of multiword phrases in the same field, i.e. you are looking for a book by two authors and you wish only to find books that are authored by them both, you should enter "Paul Smith" in the Author/Editor field and then change a second field to Author/Editor by using the drop down menu at the front of the search and type in Carolyn Wilde. You can do this for all fields for all items which will give you a very flexible and comprehensive search.

Subjects

All our publications have a number of subjects associated with them. If you want to add a subject to your search, select one from the drop down box. If you search by subject alone you will return a very large number of results from our extensive list of publications.

Ordering Your Search Results

Author/Editor
Whatever fields you have entered in the search screen you can choose to have the results ordered alphabetically on the author or editor of the item you are looking for.

Title
Whichever fields you have entered in the search screen, you can choose to have the results ordered alphabetically on the title of the item you are looking for.

Best Match
The search finds items that best match the words and phrases in your query and lists them in this order. This is done by automatically finding products that match the exact wording of the query . If a match occurs multiple times the relevancy will be higher and therefore the match will be deemed better overall in the one where it occurs most frequently .

Refining Your Search

Once you have carried out your search you can narrow your search results. If you have searched for a title of Economics you will receive a large number of results; you can reduce this number by entering another term into the Refine Search box on the search results page. Using this box will search within the same field you entered your first search term, i.e. if you enter a term into the Refine Search field the search will look for instances of your original term and the new term in the same field.

Searching Journal Articles

To view articles published in our journals by a particular author or topic, you can use the quick search page on Wiley InterScience. You will also find Simple and Advanced search options there to help you search for articles by journal name or by subject areas.
